The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act
In 2015 The Senedd/Welsh Parliament passed the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act. The Act seeks to improve the social, environmental, economic and cultural well-being of Wales and to protect the interests of Future Generations.
To this day, this groundbreaking piece of legislation ensures that governance decisions are made to a set of standards and beliefs that work together to implement the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and create a better society in Wales.
The Act is the first of its kind anywhere in the world and has been used as an exemplar for how you can institutionalise Sustainable Development into the governance of both other states and countries, but also private organisations.
As a part of the Act, a Future Generations Commissioner was established, and Sophie was appointed as the inaugural commissioner. Sophie helped to create the wider Office of the Future Generations Commissioner and set the direction of policy of this new organisation. Through her time as Commissioner Sophie led the way, working to transform the culture and ways of working of the the public sector in Wales.
In 2023, Sophie’s seven year term as the commissioner came to an end and she began Sophie Howe Associates.
Sophie Howe started this business to continue the transformational work she was able to do as Commissioner, and put to use her incredibly unique experience.
